Coffee and Avocado: a Winning Combination for Smooth and Creamy Drinks!

Avocados are definitely one of our star food items and are well-known for their high fibre and good fats. Sliced on toast, served as guacamole with chips, and even used as an ingredient for some cakes, avocados can be eaten in all kinds of ways. However, did you know that you can also use them to make coffee-based drinks? Although this might strike you as a somewhat surprising combination, it’s actually becoming increasing popular. We’ll tell you all you need to know about this latest trend!

If you’re an Instagram fan, you may well have come across the “avolatte” phenomenon. The buzz started with a video posted on the page of a Melbourne coffee house.

Combing two of Melbourne's obsessions – lattes and avo 😂

A post shared by Truman Cafe (@trumancafealbertpark) on

However, it had all started off just as a simple joke among Truman Coffee’s barista team, who decided to combine the two obsessions shared by Melbourne hipsters: avocados and café latte. Very quickly, these “avolatte” images went viral, so much so that the “avolatte” is now being reproduced by baristas the world over.

If you feel tempted to do the same at home, it couldn’t be simpler! Halve your avocado carefully (we’ll tell you how: https://www.mycactus.lu/3-steps-for-perfectly-prepared-avocados/?lang=en) and scoop out the flesh. You’ve already made your coffee and heated your milk, so you’re all set to pour them into the avocado skin and enjoy your drink. Do watch out though as you drink your coffee, because an avocado skin isn’t as practical as a cup.

A coffee straight from Indonesia

While we might laugh about the Australian barista’s inventiveness, another avocado-based drink had for a long time already been all the rage in Indonesia. This drink is called “Es Alpukat”, which literally means “ice avocado”. It’s a sort of cold coffee mixed with evaporated milk, avocado and ice cubes. And for those with a sweet tooth, there’s even a version with vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce.

This avocado-coffee smoothie has really taken off in recent months and now features on menus in more and more cafes and bars. It has to be said that this drink really works because the avocado gives it a creamy texture, while at the same time being nutritious – which many coffee sweeteners certainly are not.

To try out this recipe at home, you’ll need:

  • 1/2 avocado
  • 1 cup of coffee
  • 1/2 cup evaporated milk or coconut milk (for a more fragrant taste)
  • Agave syrup
  • 1 vanilla pod

Instructions

In a blender, blend the avocado flesh with the coffee, milk, vanilla pod and seeds and a dash of agave syrup, until you get a nice liquid consistency. Serve in a tall glass with a few ice cubes. Avocado-coffee smoothies should be drunk cold, or even chilled.
