4 Specialist Breads from Cactus for You to Try!
Breakfast, sandwiches, to go with your piece of cheese … any opportunity to enjoy a slice of bread is good! Although there are dozens of different types of bread, they are not all of the same quality. At Cactus, we place great importance on providing you every day with a whole range of different sorts of bread which offer quality above all else. Among the specialist breads available in our stores here are four for you to try.
Tourte Bread
This natural sourdough rye bread is made according to traditional artisanal baking methods and is inspired by the recipe from Max Nosbusch, the well-known baker in Vianden.
With its taste of years gone by, flavoursome crumb and well-baked crust, it takes time, as well as great care, to make this bread. The natural, slow fermentation gives it its characteristic features: a solid, crunchy crust, a distinctive taste and honeycombed structure.
More nourishing than white bread, Tourte bread is perfect for eating with deli meats and cheese, but it’s also great buttered to accompany oysters when you have special occasion meals.
Baguette à l’ancienne
The most popular bread variety the world over is most definitely the baguette.
Baguettes made the “ancient” way, also called “traditional”, baguettes are produced according to natural fermentation principles, then shaped by hand and baked on stone hearths. There is also a “slowbaking” version where the kneading is slow so as to avoid turning the crumb white and to allow the aromas to fully develop. The result is artisanal bread with a soft, chewy crumb and a thin, crunchy crust: delicious to eat with a taste that can’t be matched.
With butter and jam, the baguette à l’ancienne is an essential part of your breakfast, but it has so much more to offer. You’ve only got a few minutes to make yourself a meal? Why not try a pizza-baguette: slice your baguette, cover it with tomato sauce, diced ham, mushrooms and mozzarella and pop it in the oven. Absolutely delicious!

Organic Omega-3 Bread
Health experts are quite adamant that we don’t eat enough omega-3, these good fats which are found in particular in oily fish, nuts, flaxseeds and even certain plant oils. A series of omega-3 fortified food products are available such as bread. The nutritional benefits of omega-3 include helping to keep the body running smoothly, helping with cell production and enabling the nervous system to work properly. Risk of cardio-vascular disease is also lowered.
With its added flaxseeds, wheat and rapeseed germ, what makes this bread also particularly special is that it’s organic. This means that the outer layer of the grains is not exposed to pesticides or other synthetic products. This bread is also “slowbaking”-certified, which guarantees that it is high quality.
ORGANIC Spelt Bread
ORGANIC Spelt Bread
Another type of organic bread available exclusively at Cactus is our ORGANIC spelt bread, made by Franck Obertin in his Oïko-Bakhaus bakery in Munsbach. This rustic grain, ancestor of wheat, which can be traced back to 900 BC, is known for offering a poor return, which explains why it is more expensive.
Supplanted by wheat many decades ago, spelt is currently making quite a comeback with consumers, who choose it because of its nutritional values and qualities. Containing far less gluten than wheat, spelt is also easier to digest.
Nutritious, spelt provides the ideal fuel for your body, thanks to its high complex carbohydrate content. Another interesting fact: 100 grams of spelt bread provide you with 17% of your daily magnesium requirement.

So the next time you go to the bakery section in your local Cactus store what bread are you going to be tempted by?
